Before the end of the school year, Miss Marcy told us that she would be leaving Ann Arbor soon as she would be getting married and was moving to Alaska with her husband, who was in the military. She and her husband, Kenneth Teppo would return to A.A. later where he would establish a dental practice.

Where’s the first grade picture, you ask? Yours truly was absent the day pictures were taken that year, thus I never got a class picture. Mrs. Dann was the teacher.

Because of overcrowding at Wines, this class met in a classroom at nearby Forsythe Junior High. On the positive side, at recess we had our own soccer field in the area between the Wines and Forsythe parking lots. But on the negative side, in the winter every time we had music, art or gym class we had to put our coats, hats, gloves and boots on and trudge over to Wines and back. Mrs. Jobes, a graduate of Indiana University, played the ukulele and we would often start the day with a song, sometimes “Zip- A-Dee-Do-Dah.”

Mrs. Heikkinen was very popular with the class and the kids were quite disappointed when she became ill during second semester and was unable to finish out the school year. The class was then taken over by Mrs. Kentes who had been a regular substitute teacher previously. Mrs. Heikkinen’s husband was related to the All-time great Michigan football player Ralph Heikkinen.

One of the highlights of the year came when 4 girls in the class put on a performance near the end of one school day, pretending to be The Beatles and lip-syncing to one of their records. None of the boys in the class had hair that was long enough to look like a Beatle. Jane Ollenburger played Ringo Starr. Mrs. Topp and the entire class got a great kick out of it, as did school principal Mr. Powrie who happened to be passing by in the hall and came in to see what the commotion was about. Perhaps that “concert” inspired 3 class members who all went on to careers in music. Ann Gallup is now known as folk singer Annie Gallup with several CDs to her credit. Ben Miller, along with his twin brother Larry were members of the legendary Ann Arbor punk band Destroy All Monsters. And Carl Hildebrandt was the bass player in Steve Nardella’s first band which also included guitar whiz George Bedard and internationally acclaimed boogie-woogie piano player Mark “Mr. B” Braun.

The class took a field trip to the new Zion Lutheran Church on West Liberty Road. The tour guide proudly pointed out the church’s new organ and asked if anyone knew how to play. Ben Miller raised his hand and proceeded to pound out the theme song to the popular TV show “The Addams Family” as the rest of the class snapped their fingers at the appropriate moments, much to the despair of Mrs. Ross.

Students in other classes could purchase a copy of the paper at the end of the school day for two cents. In December of 1965 Wines became a two-paper school when Mrs. Morgan's 6th grade class began publishing The Wines Times.
